Due to requests from Jefferson residents, a meeting will be held later this week for people to voice their opinions dealing with a specific vehicle currently not allowed in town.
A law enforcement committee meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, November 1st at 8am in the City Hall Council Chambers for the committee is re-consider allowing all-terrain vehicles on city streets. City Administrator Mike Palmer says the committee already reviewed the request once and they unanimously voted to not amend the ordinance to allow ATVs. However, at the streets committee meeting that was held earlier this year, Council member Dave Sloan asked for the Council to discuss it as he had been getting several people asking for it.
The Iowa Legislature passed a bill that was signed into law earlier this year that allows ATVs and over-the-road (OTVs) on county and city streets. Palmer says Tuesday’s committee meeting is open to the public.
“I encourage people to come to that meeting. It’s an opportunity for people, in a little less formal environment, to talk about their concerns or support for it to the committee.”.
Palmer notes the current ordinance allows for golf carts and utility terrain vehicles (UTVs) to be driven on city streets.
