Greene County finished its 2022 high school football season with a record of 8 wins and 2 losses and the kickoff return game was at least partially responsible for that success. Getting good yardage returning kicks allows the offense to start in good field position and it lessons the number of yards to the opponents’ end zone.
The Rams were among Class 2A’s best this season when it comes to returning kicks, led by 2021 All-State return specialist Richard Daugherty. One of just three senior starters in 2022, he averaged 35.8 yards per kickoff return, topping those in 2A with at least nine returns by more than five yards per return. Daugherty had 10 returns for 358 yards and one touchdown on a return of 85 yards. That was in the season opener vs. ACGC, a 20-14 Greene County victory, and those six points proved crucial to the Rams and their six-point win.
Daugherty wasn’t the only dangerous kickoff return man for Coach Caden Duncan’s Rams as junior Gabe Ebersole had a 94 yard return on his only attempt of the season, and sophomore Camden Strennen returned 12 kickoffs for an average of 20.1 yards per return and one touchdown that covered 82 yards.
