The Iowa State Patrol is asking travelers to take precautions to get to their destination safely.

Iowa State Patrol Sergeant Alex Dinkla says the Thanksgiving holiday travel period is the one of their busiest of the year. Dinkla explains that there will be an increased number of presence on the roadways looking for motorists under the influence.

“Don’t drive impaired. If you choose to drink, don’t drive. Find that designated driver. Find that sober driver that can get you and your family members home safe.”

He also says they will be looking for motorists driving above the speed limit along with not wearing their seatbelt, distracted and disobeying any other traffic laws.

“One of the things that we’ve seen so far this year, out of 303 people that have been killed on Iowa roadways, 45% of those folks chose not to wear a seatbelt. That’s the one smallest thing that you can do to keep yourself safe in the vehicle. And if somebody else is not buckled up, make sure to tell them to buckle up.

Dinkla hopes everyone gets to the intended destination safely this holiday period.
