With some potential for measurable snowfall expected to come through Jefferson tomorrow, city crews will be ready to continue to clear the streets.
Public Works Director Dave Morlan tells Raccoon Valley Radio whenever there is two inches of snowfall, it’s an all hands on deck approach with about 15-16 city employees working to clear the streets, as well as the sidewalks and parking lots of city-owned properties.
“It takes the whole city to come out and move snow. It’s the same, you know like in the summertime when we’re weeding the cemeteries and stuff too. We have good employees all the way around and they help each other out. But if you didn’t have everybody out moving snow you’d be there forever. Typically, we’ll come out and everybody jumps in and helps. We knock it out pretty quick.’”
Morlan reminds everyone of the city snow ordinance that when there’s at least one-half inch of accumulated snowfall, vehicles need to be moved from the streets, alleyways and city-owned off street parking until the snow stops falling and the curbs are cleared from curb to curb.
“Typically the trucks will make a pass up and down the center (of the street), then they’ll come back through later on and do a pass on the outside edges, and plow it back to the curb then. So after they’ve plowed it back to the curb, you can park on the streets again. We just ask people when you’re snowblowing your driveway, please don’t blow it back out in the street after we’ve already plowed it. Because you’re just going to wind up the stuff is going to freeze down, and you’re going to have a hump, and it builds up through the winter.”
Morlan adds crews will go out whenever a snow event happens, whether it be early in the morning, during the daytime or late at night.
