If you haven’t gotten a gold star on your driver’s license or ID yet, you can head to the Guthrie County Treasurer’s Office and get that done.

Kim Christensen with the treasurer’s office says the gold star helps protect people from terrorism and identity fraud, and helps make the process of visiting federal buildings less of a hassle. It isn’t mandatory yet, but the treasurer’s office is encouraging people to get it anyway. Christensen says that there is plenty of time to get the star though, as the deadline for it becoming mandatory has been pushed back to May of 2025. She tells Raccoon Valley Radio why that has happened.

“We have been doing it in the state of Iowa for, I would say probably eight or ten years now. We’ve been compliant with this federal process for many, many years. We got on board early and we are, I think, 60 or 70 percent compliant in the state. But other states are not compliant yet, so they’re having to move that date back.”
