Saydel (Des Moines) visited Greene County in a Heart of Iowa Activities Conference girl/boy basketball doubleheader on Friday night in the high school gym in Jefferson. The Saydel girls and Greene County boys trailed much of their games, but ended up winning.

The girls’ game saw Saydel win 40-33 on the strength of a 33 point second half. The Rams led 13-7 at intermission and still was ahead 22-18 after the third quarter before the Eagles put 22 points on the board in the last eight minutes. The Rams more than doubled their 16 point scoring average, but fell to 0-10 overall and 0-6 in the conference. Kamryn Sanders scored a career high 14 points for the Rams and Emma Shipley had eight. Shipley’s second three-pointer of the game tied the score at 31-31 with one minute left. The Eagles were led by 15 points from Paige Rummans as they improved to 3-7, 1-6.

Greene County used a 29-13 fourth quarter advantage to come from behind to win 71-61. Coach Chris Nelson’s team improved to 4-6 on the season and 3-3 in conference play while the Eagles fell to 2-7, 1-6. The Eagles were seven of 15 from three-point range in the first half and finished with 11 of the long range baskets. The Rams made nine three’s, four in the last quarter. Richard Daugherty had 20 points and he sank six three-pointers. Jesse Miller had 16 points with 15 by Gabe Ebersole, and 10 by Patrick Daugherty. The Rams were down 44-28 early in the third quarter and came all the way back.

The Rams are home Jan. 9 vs. Grandview Christian (Des Moines) and on Jan. 10, again at home, in make up action vs. Perry. Both are girl/boy doubleheaders on KG98 and streamed on www.raccoonvalleyradio.com with coverage at 5:45 p.m. The girls play at 6 o’clock with the boys to follow.
