Now that the 90th Iowa General Assembly has started, a local lawmaker lays out some main topics that will be considered.

District 47 Republican Representative Carter Nordman says one of the main topics is going to be on property tax reform and he explains why the Legislature is looking to make another change after they took mental health funding off of property taxes.

“We didn’t see a whole lot of counties reduce their property taxes, which was disappointing. We took the mental health levy off property taxes and put as an obligation to the state budget, yet a lot of counties didn’t bring down their property taxes.”

Nordman points out another main topic and the main priority of Governor Kim Reynolds is on school vouchers. While Nordman is waiting for the language in a proposed bill to be presented to the House, he describes what he believes when it comes to having educational options.

“So it’s going to be a duel conversation. I don’t like when (the) conversation starts steering off to a point of, ‘Well if you support parental choice, then you can’t support public education.’ I think that’s a wrong way of looking at it. So we have to make sure that we’re looking at it as a two avenue conversation here.”

Iowa House District 47 covers Greene, Guthrie and northwestern Dallas County, including Perry. Nordman encourages anyone to contact him throughout the legislative session by emailing him at carter.nordman@legis.iowa.gov.
