Iowa House District 23 Representative Ray Sorensen says that school vouchers will be a topic throughout this legislative session.
Sorensen mentions that since the topic was a big part of Governor Kim Reynolds reelection campaign, and a big part of her Condition of the State address, there will most likely be a few variations of a bill coming through the legislature. He tells Raccoon Valley Radio how important this topic is to Reynolds.
“She even got involved with Republican Primary races on that sole issue. So it’s one of those things that I’ve talked about to our school boards and I’ve kind of warned them that an ESA (Education Student Account) or Voucher bill is coming through in some form.”
Sorensen advises that he’s open to the idea, but that he’d like to try and have something that doesn’t harm public schools, and that what needs to be done might be a complete education reform. He adds that he’d like to get some spending freedom and creativity by taking down school districts’ spending silos, saying that will help school boards and superintendents do some more stuff that would be beneficial to their individual districts.
