A bill that’s been introduced in the Iowa Senate would change how school board elections would be conducted.
Iowa Senator Brad Zaun’s Senate File 23 would essentially make school board elections partisan, along with allowing for primaries to take place ahead of the regular city council and school board elections in November. District 24 Senator Jesse Green (R-Boone) gives his initial thoughts about the bill.
“At first glance, I would say there’s probably other things that we can do to encourage healthy elections.”
Green points out the amount of interest the recent school board elections have been getting, especially in 2021.
“Without a doubt, there’s a lot more attention being put at school board elections and to me that’s a good thing that there’s more interest in that. We are blessed to have school boards be in control of their districts and whatever we can do to keep that active and people paying attention to that I’ll support. But as far as making it partisan, I haven’t really thought that issue out or have any opinion myself.”
