Four Greene County High School wrestlers took part at Saturday’s Ed Winger Classic at Urbandale High School. After Friday night’s Heart of Iowa Activities Conference tournament in Perry, Gavyn Winters (106 lbs.), Crew Conner (126 lbs.), McKinley Robbins (138 lbs.), and Jackson Turner (152 lbs.) were in the field at one of Iowa’s most competitive and deepest regular season events, featuring the top four teams in Class 3A, plus past individual State champions from all three of Iowa’s classes.

Robbins won all three matches he wrestled and advanced to the finals where he did not take the mat and medically forfeited to Ryder Block of Waverly-Shell Rock, a 2022 State champion and top ranked at the weight class in 3A. Robbins is ranked number one in 2A and is a 2021 State champion. The medical forfeit is recorded as a loss, the first in 41 matches this season for Robbins, the all-time wins and falls career leader for the Jefferson-based program.

Winters finished in fifth place after a 3-2 day on Saturday and is now 36-9, surpassing the 33 wins he recorded as a freshman. Conner and Turner did not place among the top eight in their weight classes.

Winters, Robbins, Kale Petersen (132), Brent Dennhardt (145), and Gavin Scheuermann (160) each won HOIAC titles on Friday. Focusing on improved health prior to the Feb. 11 District tournament in Webster City is a goal for the Greene County team. All that’s left on the regular season scheduled is the Jan. 27 ACGC Charger Invitational at Guthrie Center and a recently scheduled quadrangular in Jefferson on Jan. 31 with ACGC, Estherville-Lincoln Central, and Urbandale.
