The Iowa Senate passed a bill recently that intends to fix an error in a 2021 property tax law that gave local governments issues.

Iowa Senator for District 14 Sarah Trone-Garriott tells Raccoon Valley Radio last  October the state discovered an error that would cause an unintentional property tax increase and would have left property taxpayers with higher bills than expected. Trone-Gariott says that Senate File 181 will fix those unintended tax increases but it will leave local governments trying to make up the budget shortfall.

“It’s also going to impact our cities and counties saying that retroactively how they’re going to change how they assess property taxes and that’s a problem for our cities and counties that have already made their commitment to their communities that passed their budgets.”

Trone-Garriott says that our state government really needs to work better and take more time to get the legislation right the first time.

“And so our state government needs to work better with our cities and counties and respect them and we cannot steamroll over the folks that are building better communities in Iowa.”

The bill passed unanimously on February 1st.
