Some winter weather is happening in the Raccoon Valley Radio-listening area today and tomorrow.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory for Greene, Dallas and Guthrie counties from 9am Wednesday through 6pm Thursday. The National Weather Service expects Dallas and Guthrie counties to have up to one inch of snow and sleet, along with 0.10 inch of ice. They also anticipate Greene County to have a wintry mix lasting until the evening commute today and then switching to snow overnight. Greene County Sheriff Jack Williams reminds motorists to take any ice or snow-covered roadways slower, especially on curves.

“Definitely slow down more for the curves just because you’re turning and it’s easy for the backend of a vehicle to slide out on slick conditions. Slow down, take your time. If you’re going to work, leave earlier or if you’ve got to pick kids up or something, just slow down (and) take your time. Make sure you have the time to take an extra 20 minutes to get somewhere.”

Williams adds that if a vehicle slides off the road and into a ditch, call the law enforcement center if it is a non-emergency at 515-386-2136 and they will assist you. However, Williams points out it may take a bit longer for them to respond, depending on the current road conditions.

The National Weather Service anticipates Greene County to have 2-5 inches of snowfall and up to 0.25 inches of ice accumulation, along with patchy areas of blowing snow with 40 miles per hour wind gusts.
