Whether to raise the US debt ceiling continues to be a heated topic in Congress.
Third District Iowa Congressman, Republican Zach Nunn says the country is $31 trillion in debt and the debt has seen an increase in the last two years from a single party’s interest. Nunn says that he would like to see Republicans and Democrats sit down and negotiate what’s the best ways to avoid a default but also find ways to cut spending to balance the deficit.
“I believe the way to get out of the deficit is to get the government out of the way and allow the private sector and Americans to really grow our economy and not have government spending be the solution.”
Nunn made it clear that he wants to see spending cuts to improve the national debt but it should not come from programs like social security or medicare. He adds the rising debt could cause problems to every program.
“If we do not fix our spending, ultimately every program that the United States pays for will get undercut.”
Nunn has introduced a balanced budget amendment to the constitution which looks to require the President of the United States to submit a balanced budget to Congress annually and requires a three-fifths roll call vote of each chamber to increase the public debt limit.
