March is National Problem Gambling Awareness Month, and New Opportunities is looking to help those that may need it.
New Opportunities Problem Gambling Treatment Counselor Dorinda Wehde says they will be doing a series of problem gambling screening days, including two in the Raccoon Valley Radio listening area. She adds that the original gambling screening day was established in Massachusetts and takes place on the second Tuesday of March, but that she wanted help all the counties New Opportunities works in. She tells Raccoon Valley Radio how these screening days work..
“People can come in and I have a three question brief screening that I will have them do. Won’t take more than a couple of minutes, and the idea is, if they answer ‘yes’ to any of the three, then we might have a further discussion about maybe a little bit more. But just even to let the providers know that this is all they need to do with their clients, their customers, their patients, they would be able to know if there’s a gambling problem, if they need to be referred.”
There will be a screening day in Greene County on March 14th from 1-4pm at the Greene County Medical Center in Jefferson, and one in Guthrie County at the Mary J Barnett Memorial Library in Guthrie Center on March 15th from 11am to 3pm.
