A bill is now waiting for Governor Kim Reynolds to be signed into law regarding restroom and locker room usage in public schools.

Senate File 482 requires public school students to use the restrooms or locker rooms as to the sex that is identified on their birth certificate. House District 47 Representative Carter Nordman (R-Panora) tells Raccoon Valley Radio they want to protect all students in public schools adds if there are situations where a transgender male or female is being bullied or harassed because they are using the facilities according to the sex on their birth certificate, then school districts have disciplinary actions they can take.

“I do not believe that it is appropriate for a biological male to be undressing with biological females. We have heard multiple parents concerned about this happening in their schools. Again I just think it’s just common sense.”

Nordman points out the reason why Republicans didn’t include private schools as part of the legislation.

“The reason why we didn’t include private schools is the same reason why we wouldn’t include private business, they are private institutions. So this is just addressing the public schools.”

Opponents of the bill argue that this legislation will create an unsafe environment for transgender students and the LGBTQ+ community.
