track-and-field

Greene County started the girls and boys track & field seasons Tuesday in Earlham  at the 13 team Cardinals Early Bird Relays while the three person Paton-Churdan boys’ team opened at Audubon last night. Derek Merk is the head coach of the girls for Greene County and Chad Morton leads the boys’ program. Although skies were clear, it was cold with some wind at both locations.

Olivia Shannon had the highest placings on the night for the Rams. She was second in the long jump at 16′ 6-3/4″. She was fourth in the 200 meter dash at 27.53 seconds and she was on a pair of second place relays. The 4 x 200 was clocked in 1:53.77 with Shannon, Kamryn Sanders, Natalie Heupel, and Bella Schroeder. Also placing second was the 4 x 100 in :53.89 with the same quartet. Emma Hoyle was fourth in the shot put at 31′ 8-1/4″ and fifth in the discus throw with a best toss of 93′ 2″.  Coach Merk said he was especially pleased with the younger girls. “They stepped in and filled reoles in varsity relays throughout the night. We are looking forward to watching them continue to improve over the couree of the season.”

The highest placing for the Greene County boys was the second place distance medley relay in 3:51.11 with Trey Schilling, Jesse Miller, Drew Wolterman, and Camden Strennen  Coach Morton said his squad was missing four athletes due to injuries, but he added it was good to get a meet in after the Rams cancelled their Early Bird Meet.

Coach Kory Jeschke reports none of the P-C events were place winners at Audubon. The Rockets’ girls team competes at Audubon on Thursday to begin their season, weather permitting.
