The Iowa Legislature is considering a bill that could limit the age for youth to have their own social media account.
House District 47 Representative Carter Nordman tells Raccoon Valley Radio there’s discussions happening with lawmakers to determine what appropriate age should a minor have their own social media account and/or at what age does there need to be parental consent for their child to have a social media account.
“Not a lot of people know this but there’s actually federal law right now regarding kids 13 and younger from the usage of social media, not allowing to have that. And one of the conversations might be just having our attorney general enforce that law more or attempt to enforce that law.”
The proposed bill that is in the House Ways and Means Committee, would ban anyone under the age of 18 from having a social media account and that social media companies would be fined $1,000 everytime they are found in violation.
Nordman believes this bill is far from being finalized and it must get out of the Ways and Means Committee before it can be considered by the full House.
