NCAA Division I decathletes don’t normally have a lot of opportunities to display their talents in the 10 event endurance test, but Carter Morton of Jefferson, a third year athlete at the University of Northern Iowa, competed in one of the season’s top decathlons last Thursday and Friday at Azusa-Pacific in Azusa, California at the Bryan Clay Invitational. There were so many decathletes at the meet they placed them into three divisions with A being the top grouping, with B next, and C third.
Morton scored a career best 7,210 points and placed sixth in group A, putting him among the top 25 of D1 decathletes in the country. He won the high jump at 6′ 7′, plus set personal best point totals in the 100 meter dash, 1,500 meter run, the javelin throw, and the discus throw. Five events were held on Thursday and five on Friday. Morton had an outstanding meet despite competing with a number of injuries.
