Last week a Chicago man was stopped on Interstate 80 and arrested on felonies for a controlled substance violation and failure to affix a drug stamp.

According to court documents, on May 3rd an Adair Police Officer was sitting at the 76 mile marker on Interstate 80 when he observed a black Ford Utility Vehicle speeding at 88 miles per hour (mph) in a 70mph zone. The officer then initiated a traffic stop.

The driver, 59-year-old Johnny Sparks, claimed he was trying to get to a restroom for him and his wife. After writing him a warning for speeding, the officer asked Sparks if he had any marijuana, to which he replied that he did have a joint in his pocket. The officer had probable cause to search the vehicle and found two large cooler bags of marijuana THC edibles, a backpack that was full of marijuana, a grinder in the bag that Sparks had pulled his identification from and more edibles in the center console.

After opening one of the cooler bags to confirm what was inside, the officer placed Sparks under arrest, and released the vehicle to Sparks’s wife after confiscating the drugs, then transported him to the Adair County Jail, where he was charged with intent to deliver marijuana and failure to affix drug tax stamp, both Class D Felonies.
