With several opportunities in Greene County this summer where people can serve food to others, a free class is being offered by Greene County ISU Extension to show people how to serve food safely.

Food Safety for Events will be held Thursday from 5:30-7:30pm at the Greene County Extension Office in Jefferson. Extension Director Lori Mannel says this class is for anyone interested in being a food vendor, whether you are serving popcorn, pretzels, to sandwiches and casseroles, at the Bell Tower Festival, when the Register’s Annual Great Bike Ride Across Iowa (RAGBRAI) comes through, to a church banquet.

Mannel points out participants will not receive a certificate at the end of the one-day program.

“It’s mainly for the education, there is no certification. This is just an awareness program for education. But we sure hope that you’re conscientious and we want to make sure that all the food you serve is safe.”

Topics that will be covered include the four steps to ensure that food is safely being prepared and served, and those four steps are: clean, separate, cook and chill. The class will be led by a registered dietitian with Extension. Call the Extension Office at 515-386-2138 or stop by to register.
