The renewal of the softball rivalry between Greene County and Perry took place at the home of the Jayettes on Wednesday night with the Rams winning by a 10-1 final. The teams are going in opposite directions with the Rams winning 10 of their last 11 games, with the Jayettes now having a six game losing streak. Coach Tom Kennedy’s Rams are 16-5 overall and tied for first in the conference at 11-1. Perry drops to 6-6 in league play and 8-11 on the season.
Pitcher Emma Hoyle continued her outstanding senior seasons. She allowed four hits and one unearned run with 15 strikeouts, no walks, and no one hit with a pitch. The Rams had two errors, which led to Perry tying the score 1-1 in the second inning after the Rams led 1-0 in the first. Greene County scored three runs in the third inning and six more in the fifth.
Offensively, the Rams racked up 15 hits with Hoyle hitting a three run homer, adding a bunt single, and driving in four runs. Emma Stream went four for four with three singles, a double, and three RBI. Olivia Shannon had three singles and two stolen bases, tying her with 2013 graduate Jennifer Kennedy for the most steals for Greene County in a single season at 29. Alex Peters and Payton Kokenge each added two base hits. Becca Anderson doubled and Chanlyn Cunningham had a base hit. Anderson, Kokenge and Paige Teeples each knocked in a run.
Greene County is at home in Jefferson later today with non-conference opponent Kuemper Catholic (Carroll) at the City Diamond on E. Lincolnway. The varsity game is first at 5:30 p.m. on KG98 and streamed on www.raccoonvalleyradio.com. The JV teams will play after the varsity is done.
