The Greene County Historical Society is hosting a special event this Sunday.
A panel discussion will take place at 2pm Sunday at the historical museum in Jefferson about the social movements in the 1950s, 60s, and 70s. Members of the panel include a former Jefferson resident who now lives in Fairfield with Patti Miller. She will talk about her experiences as a Freedom Rider in Mississippi, as well as a teacher and other parts of the civil rights movement of the 60s. Cooper resident Juck Bucklin will discuss his life as a pacifist and the environmental movement.
Other panelists are George Naylor of Churdan who will speak on the student movement of the 60s, as well as the farm movement in the 70s; Mary Richie of Jefferson and Des Moines will talk about the women’s movement, and Tim Heisterkamp of Jefferson will share information about the conservative movements. The program will be moderated by Chuck Offenburger of Jefferson. Musical accompaniment will be provided by another Jefferson resident with Rick Morain, who will perform songs that were emblematic of each of the movements when they transition to those topics.
Sunday’s program is free and open to the public.
