Greene County ended the 2023 softball season with the most wins in eight years, a second place finish in the Heart of Iowa Activities Conference, and several Greene County program records. The season ended with a final record of 22-7 after starting with six wins and four losses in the first 10 games. A 16-3 record in the last 19 games put the season total at 22 wins, the most since the 32-7 Rams of 2015 placed third in the Class 3A State tournament.
The five seniors on the team had their first winning season on the varsity level and were instrumental in taking the program from struggling to win games to a final ranking of number 13 in Class 3A by the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union. The five are pitcher Emma Hoyle, catcher Emma Stream, first baseman Paige Teeples, left fielder Alexa Peters, and centerfielder Olivia Shannon. All five have been starters for anywhere from three to five seasons. Hoyle and Stream were the Greene County battery for every pitch in every game for five seasons, something rarely seen in high school softball.
Coach Kennedy heaped praise on the quintet for not only their contributions to the softball program, but for the type of people they are. He added he’s looking forward to watching them go from recent high school grads to wherever life takes them.
