There is an upcoming workshop that is designed for anyone who is involved in renting agricultural property.

Greene County ISU Extension is offering a “Farmland Leasing” class on Friday from 9-11am at the Extension Office in Jefferson. Topics that will be covered include the recent cash rent and land value surveys, improving landowner and tenant communication, properly writing and terminating a farm lease, and determining a fair cash rent, among other things.

ISU Extension Farm and Agriculture Business Management Specialist Alexis Stevens will lead the program and says selecting a fair cash rent because over half of the landowners in several counties have no ties to farming, so they either inherited the farmland or they bought it as an investment.

“Those people may accidentally charge way too much, they might not charge anywhere near enough, and we want to prevent that. We want you to be in the ‘sweet spot’ of what’s fair, not only for me the landowner so I get a return on my investment but also so the producer can continue to be profitable and make money.”

The fee is $20 per person or $30 for a couple. The deadline to sign up is Wednesday by contacting the Extension Office at 515-386-2138 or stop by to register.
