U.S. Legislators are still in session, but will let out at the end of the month to take their summer break.
Senator Chuck Grassley says that in the time before the break, there is only one major bill that will be worked on, and that is this year’s version of the National Defense Authorization Act. The bill is what sets the policy for the next year of national security for the nation. The House of Representatives has already passed their version of the bill, but there are those that believe some of the amendments attached to it are controversial.
Grassley says that some of the things that those controversial amendments touch on are what he calls culture war, different things that the Biden Administration has attached to other defense bills that don’t necessarily have anything to do with defense, including paying for individuals to travel to states that allow abortions get one, which is prohibited under the Hyde Amendment.
Grassley tells Raccoon Valley Radio about an amendment he’d like to add to the bill.
“I am going to have an amendment to increase prosecutions for interstate child sex abuse. And I don’t think there’s any doubt about that going to be included in the Senate version of the defense bill.”
Grassley mentions that his priority with the Senate’s version of the bill is to spend more on national defense, because he believes that the defense of the country is the number one responsibility of the federal government, but believes that the nation is currently at a weak spot after giving resources to Ukraine in their fight against Russia. He adds that he also believes that the best way to keep peace is to have a strong military, and that the United States needs to replenish its resources. July 31st will be the last day of session before Senators and Representatives take some time off, then return to session after Labor Day
