Perry senior Lydia Olejniczak was recently named to the Iowa Girls Coaches Association First Team All State Squad. The honor marked the fourth time that Olejniczak was recognized as an All Stater. Established in 1985, the IGCA is the only association of athletic directors and softball coaches dedicated to promoting the achievements of the Iowa girl, her coach and all those that support them.
Olejniczak was joined on the elite first team squad by area standouts Lauren Hagedorn (ADM), Aubrey Johansen (DCG), and Winterset’s Brynn Acton and Neela Applegate. Winterset’s Steve Corkrean was named the 4A Coach of the Year after guiding the Huskies to the state title.
Dating back to the 1974 season, Perry has had only one other four time all stater in any sport. Ironically, both players were involved in the sport of softball. Katie Shimon was a 4x all state pitcher for the Jayettes in the late 90’s before going on to have a stellar career at Drake University.
Olejniczak will look to continue her softball career at Drake as well. The senior shortstop closes out her career with three consecutive first team all state selections after earning a Third team spot as an eighth grader.
The multiple sport athlete battled through a serious injury this summer only to have her year cut short due to surgery. Despite the injury, she still put up impressive numbers, hitting .348 with four home runs and twelve extra base hits. Olejniczak was recognized as one of the top offensive players in the state during her junior campaign. She was among the state leaders in batting average (506), Slugging Percentage (.910) and stolen bases (20). She led Perry with five home runs and 22 extra base hits. She also scored a team high 36 runs.
