This week is the beginning of the Iowa State Fair and Greene County 4-H’ers will be well represented.
Greene County ISU Extension 4-H and Youth Coordinator Samantha Hardaway says 30 4-H static exhibits qualified from the Greene County Fair for the state fair. She tells Raccoon Valley Radio how static judging is done at the state fair.
“I drop them off the Monday before state fair starts and there’s judging going on for three days and it’s just the judge and the project, the kid isn’t there. But it really encourages the kids to work on that write up and practice their writing skills to really convey messages to the judges.”
Hardaway points out there are also two 4-H’ers who have communication exhibits and one 4-H’er involved in fashion. There are also 26 4-H’ers who are exhibiting 36 species of animals at the state fair. Hardaway explains how 4-H horses are judged.
“They actually exhibit before the Iowa State Fair starts. So they come down on Monday, August 7th and then they leave on August 10th. So if you’re coming down to the state fair midway through all the horses you see there will not be 4-H and FFA horses, those will be open class horses. But if you want to see them, you can come to the pre-fair and you can come see them exhibit. I know I’m going to stop down because we do have quite a few horse kids exhibiting.”
