While the objective of the current initiative that the Iowa State Patrol and other law enforcement agencies is to crack down on drunk drivers, those that don’t drink need to be safe as well.

Iowa State Patrol Trooper Shelby McCreedy says that with Labor Day weekend being the unofficial end of summer, many people choose to celebrate over the long weekend, including enjoying alcoholic beverages in a variety of settings. She mentions that those that are looking to celebrate should make a plan, and stick to that plan once the celebrations have started. McCreedy tells Raccoon Valley Radio how those that celebrate without drinking can try to stay safe on the roadways.

“As far as other people on the roadway, just do the things that you can do to try and improve your chances of survival in the event of a crash. And wear your seatbelt, maintain the speed limit and put the phone down. Just be cognizant of what is going on around you and hopefully we can get everybody through this Labor Day weekend safely.”

McCreedy explains that for those who do plan to drink during the weekend, plan ahead and have arrangements in place so that you don’t have to drive, whether that’s having someone pick you up, riding with a friend who has not been drinking, or staying with the person who is hosting, it’s always better to avoid driving after drinking. She adds that for those who do plan to host celebratory events, have plans in place for your friends that drink alcohol, that way you know that everyone is alright at the end of the night.
