The wait is over for youth or disabled hunters to get out in the fields before the regular deer season starts.
According to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, the youth and disabled deer hunting season kicks off today and will run until October 1st. DNR Conservation Officer Dustin Eighmy says that any individuals under the age of 16 can purchase a youth deer tag at any licensed vendor and find a licensed mentor to hunt with them at all times. Eighmy notes that this season is a time for building relationships and teaching youth about the sport of hunting.
“It’s probably always one of their most memorable favorable hunts. It is mine when I get to introduce that youngster into the hunting world.”
Eighmy also explains that there is an application on the DNR website that someone who is disabled must apply to hunt with a bow, shotgun, rifle or muzzleloader. He mentions that wearing blaze orange is a requirement during the youth and disabled hunting seasons.
