Carothers Family receiving Heritage Farm Award

During the Iowa State Fair, almost 400 farms from around the state were honored as either Century or Heritage Farms.

Of those 400, four were from Guthrie County. Century Farms are farms that have been in the same family for 100 years, while Heritage Farms have been in the same family for 150 years. The Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship has been honoring Century Farms since 1976, with more than 21,000 named to date, and Heritage Farms since 2006, with 1,800 named to date.

At the 2023 Iowa State Fair, three Century Farms were named in Guthrie County, belonging to Richard and Betty Knudsen of Coon Rapids, Michael and Gretchen Tighe of Jamaica and Donald and Wyona Williams of Casey, and one Heritage Farm was named, belonging to Mary Jane Carothers of Guthrie Center. The Knudsen farm has been around since 1917, while the Tighe Farm has been in operation since 1919, and the Williams Estate began in 1882, and the Carothers Farm started in 1871. Photos of the families can be found in this story online.
