The Perry Public Works Department has started to think about winter.

Director Josh Wuebker says that even though winter is still months away they have started to evaluate and prepare for when winter conditions arise. Wuebker explains there are a number of things they can do now that will make their life easier when they’re plowing snow. He tells Raccoon Valley Radio that they have poured 300 yards of concrete this summer in hopes to fix issues in the road like potholes and they also have been cutting down branches to improve visibility for plow trucks.

We have some different areas in town that maybe we’re like a settled street cut or a manhole that might have raised up over time where that could be like a grabber for a plow, for a plow to hit that. So they’re lowering those. A lot of concrete work is going around town. I think we’ve poured almost 300 yards of concrete just around town, different patches, different, sidewalks, intakes, different stuff like that. So we have been doing it.”

He adds that they’re getting their trucks inspected by the Iowa Department of Transportation in a week and they will then put the plows on the truck. Wuebker says he feels good about his public works team this year.

“We have an amazing team down the street department. We do have a lot of some new employees. We had some employees that retired. And so for a couple of them, this is going to be their first winner. So it’ll be a learning experience for them, but they’ll catch on to it. They’re a great group of guys and everybody will help everyone out.”

Wuebker mentions that they received 400 tons of salt which will last them through the winter season.
