The Perry Fire Department has been called out to multiple combine fires and they have advice to avoid a disaster.
Fire Chief Grason Hill says that farmers need to take time and stop every few rounds from harvesting to clean their combine to stop stocks and other debris from building up inside their machine’s engine.
“I know I talked to a couple of farmers that had been doing that, but like I say, it just builds up so quick with the wind blowing and everything, then it’s hard to do. But yeah, they want to make sure they have a good fire extinguisher with them on all their equipment, whether it be a tractor or combine and just try to keep them as clean as they possibly can.”
Hill says that just one spark could cause a grass fire with how windy and dry the conditions have been in central Iowa.
