A notice for Jefferson residents and business owners, water mains will be flushed next week.
Jefferson Public Works Director Dave Morlan says different portions of town will have their water mains flushed, starting Monday, for three days. He explains why the Water Department does this on a bi-annual basis, with the other time water mains are flushed in the spring.
“The water in the mains, you’ll get some rust in them and stuff like that, there’s some deadends and that sort of thing. So by going around and opening all of the fire hydrants, they’re getting rust and they’re getting fresh water back into the deadends, and that sort of thing. It’s for water quality.”
Residents are reminded that there might be some discoloration for a few hours after the mains have been flushed and so wait until the water clears up before using it to consume, cook with or do laundry. Morlan points out what people can do if they see a rust color on their clothes if they do laundry.
“If they get some rust or something in some whites or something, they can wash them right away again. If it doesn’t come out, they can contact the Water Department and they have a granular chemical that they’ll give them to try and get the rust out.”
