US Senator Joni Ernst recently announced an initiative to fight the sale of fentanyl on social media.
Ernst says that she and several colleagues have reached out to Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg to ask him to crack down on the sale of fentanyl precursor chemicals on Facebook and Instagram. She tells Raccoon Valley Radio about how easily the drug is changing hands with the help of the social media sites.
“So currently, any social media user that’s using Facebook or Instagram can go out and find numerous posts which are advertising these different chemicals with taglines like ‘home delivery service,’ and ‘100% custom clearance rate.’ And they’re finding all of those things with just the click of a button. So you can imagine how many kids are getting a hold of those precursors, how many adults might get things delivered to them, not understanding that there’s fentanyl included in those pills.”
Ernst shares that roughly 70,000 Americans die because of fentanyl overdoses every year. She mentions that it’s extremely disappointing to see such a large tech company allow the sale of this dangerous drug on its sites.
