The AC/GC Chargers cross country and football teams are in action today.
The cross country teams will be competing at the Class 1A State Championships, with the girls running at 2pm, and the boys taking to the track at 2:45pm. The teams compete at the Lakeside Municipal Golf Course just north of Fort Dodge.
The football team will be competing to continue their postseason push, and move to the round of 8 in Class A. The 9-0 Chargers host the 8-1 Lynnville-Sully Hawks, who defeated Pekin last week to make it to this point.
Leading in passing and rushing yards for the chargers is junior quarterback Jathan South, who has completed on 7 of 22 passes for 247 yards and 3 touchdowns, and has moved the ball 1044 yards on 114 carries for 15 touchdowns on the ground. Senior running back Anthony Solorzano leads in receiving yards, with 5 receptions for 201 yards and 3 touchdowns, and adds 846 rushing yards and 9 rushing touchdowns, while fellow senior linebacker Tegan Slaybaugh leads the team defensively, with 57 total tackles, 3 of which were for a loss of yards, along with half a sack and a fumble recovery.
For the Hawks, senior Lucas Sieck leads in passing yards, completing 41 of 76 throws for 632 yards and 4 touchdowns, and adds 121 rushing yards and 4 rushing touchdowns. Fellow senior CJ Nikkel leads in rushing yards, with 108 carries for 612 yards and 5 touchdowns, while fellow senior Blake Van Wyk leads in receiving yards, with 23 receptions for 358 yards and 3 touchdowns. Sophomore Dawson James leads the team defensively, with 55 tackles, 10 of which are for a loss of yards, along with 2 sacks, a fumble recovery and an interception.
Kickoff is set for 7pm and Chargers Stadium in Guthrie Center. The Raccoon Valley Radio Sports Network will broadcast the game, with coverage to begin at 6:30pm.
