In the world of high school volleyball, the ADM Tigers had a bittersweet night on Monday as they battled in the first round of the state tournament, losing 3-1. But this season was more than just a game; it was a journey of friendship, dedication, and a touch of history.

Marissa Gerleman, one of the two seniors, reflected on the season, saying, “It was an amazing feeling because it was really a team effort to make it this far. For our school, it was history, with only a second time being able to make it to this tournament since 2005, so I think that just adds another special level, not only to me as a senior but to be able to show our school and the community that showed up for us.”

Madison Siefken, the other senior, shared her thoughts as well, “100% I think that even though today we didn’t get the outcome that we really wanted, I think just being here and being in this atmosphere is something that everyone in our team has dreamed of for so long. It’s really really awarding, and just fulfilling that we’re even here today.”

The bond between Marissa and Madison has deep roots, as Marissa pointed out, “Our journey began together our freshman year in school and in club.” Their teamwork and leadership were crucial. Madison acknowledged the support they provided each other, “I think it helps because we both know that we wanted to play at the next level, so we both held each other accountable and made sure that we each stepped up as leaders and pushed each other.”

The team’s journey wasn’t without its challenges. Marissa emphasized the importance of hard work, “No matter what, continue to work. I mean, our freshman year is 3-22, nobody thought that we would ever make it to the state tournament, but we put in work outside of school, outside of the season, and really, we did it as a team.”

Siefken shared her thoughts on the role of a setter, “I think just making sure that the setter is coming up, realizing that sometimes they need to make the adjustment. I know a lot of times, you know, the hitters are always adjusting, every set’s going to be different, but I think just making sure you’re talking to your hitters and giving them exactly what they want is how you’re going to get the most assists.”

As they look forward, Marissa shared her plans, “I’ll carry it with me through our next year’s just in my next year playing college volleyball.” but hoping she’ll make another trip to state in another ADM sport,  “I’ll just say no matter what, continue to work. I play soccer too, so I’ll be able to hopefully go to the state tournament again for soccer. We went last year, so just focusing on Club volleyball in the winter and being able to really soak it up with that team and then go out and represent my school.”

In the end, it’s not just about the scores or the wins; it’s about the bonds, the friendships, and the journey. Marissa summed it up well, “It’s not just about the score, but it’s about everything else. So just being able to stay confident in yourself, work hard, and do it for your teammates and trust for a long time.”

Both athletes are going to college to play. Marissa to Blue Mountain Christian University and Madison to University of Illinois Springfield. Both plan to stay in touch regardless of the distance.
