The American Legion Post #11 in Jefferson is inviting any high school student in Greene County an opportunity to receive scholarship money.

The American Legion High School Oratorical Scholarship Program is open to all 9th-12th graders that attend a public high school or who are homeschooled. Chair Barb Labate says there are two speech contests that the applicant must prepare. The first must be on an aspect of the US Constitution and emphasizes the duties and obligations of a citizen to the federal government. This speech must be an original work on the applicant and be 8-10 minutes in length.

The second speech has to be on an amendment to the Constitution or a section of the document. This speech must be 3-5 minutes long. Notecards are permitted at the post level of the contest.

Scholarship amounts at the post level include $100 for first place, $75 for second and $50 for third. Winners will advance onto subsequent levels including district, area, state and nationals. Applications and prepared speeches must be submitted to Labate by November 1st. More information can be found by clicking the link below and contacting Labate at 515-386-5547.
