With the burn ban lifted in Greene County, Jefferson residents can once again openly burn yard waste.
Jefferson Police Chief Mark Clouse reminds residents that only yard waste is permitted to be burned within city limits.
“So that stack of lumber you’re cleaning out of the garage, I understand that used to be a tree, but that is not yard waste. We’re talking branches, leaves and dead plants from the summer, that type of item.”
Clouse points out open burning is permitted throughout the year from sunrise to sunset and residents can only burn on their property and not on the street or alleyway. He recommends that if you decide to burn that you keep an eye on the burn pile.
“If we’re going to burn, we need to be there attending that fire because a fire can truly get out of control in just a matter of minutes. So just encourage you to stay out there and tend to your fire until it’s over with.”
Clouse adds to be mindful of neighbors that burning yard waste can impact the air quality as well. Residents are also allowed to drop off their yard waste at the dump site at Daubendiek Park.
