The Iowa Department of Transportation has had two major projects happening in Greene County this year.
Iowa Department of Transportation Jefferson Construction Residency Engineer Jenny Hoskins says a bridge project that was north of Paton on Iowa Highway 144 is done. Earlier this spring a bridge was replaced near the city of Paton with a cast-in-place box culvert. Hoskins tells Raccoon Valley Radio the new structure now has shoulders that match the width of the roadway. She adds the bridge was nearing the end of its service life and the project was done by Graves Construction Company, Incorporated from Spencer for $1,105,967.
The more visible project that is nearing completion is an asphalt overlay on US Highway 30 from Iowa Highway 25 near Scranton to just east of Iowa Highway 4 in Jefferson. Hoskins says the contractor, Manatts, were able to get shoulder widening from two to four feet, and added turn lanes at the T-intersection with Grimmell Road in Jefferson, as well as turn lanes at the intersection with Highway 25 completed. The other major aspect was installing asphalt on the roadway, which Hoskins notes started the last week of September and crews were done on Saturday, October 28th.
Hoskins adds there is just guardrail work on the bridge west of Jefferson over the Raccoon River, as well as clearing and grubbing, and erosion control. The total cost of this project was $7.7 million.
