For a second consecutive year, the Greene County High School Cheerleaders are going to compete in the Iowa Cheerleading State Championships.
Head coach Shannon Black says they are competing in all three categories in Class 2A, including cheer/dance, stunt group and game time spirit. She tells Raccoon Valley Radio what the most difficult part about the entire competition was last year, which helped them better prepare for this year.
“So it’s really confusing. So there’s rubrics in each of the divisions. So in the cheer/dance, that’s probably the most complicated rubrics out of all of them. And so they’re judging you on the difficulty of it but then also the execution of it. So you could try something really difficult but not executed well and get a lower score, or you could do something that’s maybe a little bit simpler but get high execution and end up with the same type of score.”
Black explains a new category this year is the game time spirit, which last year was “time out.”
“This year it’s that one minute kind of time out cheer but then also our school song. So (Band Director) Wes Anderson and the band were kind enough to record the school song for us to take down, and so they’ll be competing in that as well.”
Black adds the 25 girls have a goal to get in the top five in each of the three categories. She says the contest takes place at the Jacobsen Center on the state fairgrounds in Des Moines on Saturday. They are the first group to compete in stunt group at 8:12am, game time spirit is at 10:59am and cheer/dance at 1:10pm.Tickets are $10 per person and can be purchased at the door.
