As Greene County begins its first season of high school bowling, there are some aspects of the sport that are new to many in the school district, including the coach. Raccoon Valley Radio talked with Coach John Woodford about the sport. “I’m really looking forward to it,” the veteran bowler said of getting the season started. One of the differences between bowling and other Greene County high school sports is that practices and meets are held at, well, a bowling alley. In Greene County’s case, Sparetime Lanes in Jefferson. Another difference is that Woodford is conducting practices just two days week, on Wednesdays and Thursdays.

When Woodford coaches his first high school bowling match, it will also be the first time he’s seen a high school bowling match. That will likely hold true for most Ram bowlers and spectators. Coach Woodford expects about 20 boys at the first practice, and as many as six girls could report.

There are three classes of high school bowling in Iowa with Greene County in 1A, the smallest of the three classes.
