An Adel man was fatally injured from an alleged incident on Interstate-80 near Urbandale last Sunday.

According to court documents, an Urbandale Police Officer was assisting with a vehicle that was being towed on the right shoulder of the westbound lanes at 10:10pm Sunday on I-80 near mile marker 130. The patrol vehicle had its emergency lights and its move left indicators flashing. A Highway Helper vehicle was also on scene behind the patrol vehicle with its indicator lights telling motorists to move left.

Court documents show that 54-year-old Dmytro Prysich of Hamtramck, Michigan, was driving a 2024 Volvo Semi Tractor-Trailer that was also heading west on I-80 and didn’t slow down or move over and struck the driver of the tow truck, 45-year-old Joshua Villa, as he was getting out of the tow truck. Villa was pronounced dead at the scene.

Court documents show that Clive Police eventually stopped Prysich. The suspect told police that he thought he hit a bird and officers could smell the odor of alcohol coming from Prysich and that he couldn’t keep his balance when standing. There was also noticeable damage to the passenger side of the semi. Prysich consented to a breathalyzer test, which preliminary results were above the legal alcohol limit of 0.08.

Prysich was arrested and charged with a Class B Felony for homicide by vehicle-operating under the influence, a Class C Felony for knowingly leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death, as well as a misdemeanor for failure to change lane upon approach to emergency stationary vehicle. Prysich was booked and remains in the Polk County Jail under a $500,000 cash only bond.
