It took the US House three weeks to select a new Republican House Speaker since the ousting of former Speaker Kevin McCarthy.

Iowa’s Third Congressional District Representative Zach Nunn says Speaker Mike Johnson, representative of Louisiana, or as Nunn calls him “Miracle Mike,” was impressed with his leadership abilities from the start.

“He has been able to bring people together on the far right of the (Republican) conference, as well as the people who might be considered more moderate. He’s also been able to give the people who ousted (former Speaker Kevin) McCarthy and had very little plan and basically hung up government here in (Washington) D.C. for three weeks while they fettered away their ideas.”

Nunn talks about the respect he has for Speaker Johnson in that he believes any congressional member should be allowed to bring an amendment to any bill forward.

“Guys like me who are brand new freshmen, who have been on this job for ten months, I’ve told him, I’ve got 800,000 bosses back in Iowa and they expect me to be a voice for them and not a voice for a Republican or a Democrat agenda.”

While Nunn believes any presiding officer in the US House should be accountable to the majority of the body, he has been doing several things while the House was at a standstill selecting its new Speaker. He says he continues to support Israel and hold Iran accountable, moving Farm Bill priorities forward and focusing on the southern border.
