The first gun season for deer starts today.

Iowa Department of Natural Resources Conservation Officer Jeremy King says that the first gun season lasts until December 6th, before a two day break. The second gun season then starts on December 9th, and goes through the 17th. King reminds hunters that they must wear a vest that is solid blaze orange, but encourages them to include a blaze orange hat as well. He adds that deer see in grayscale, meaning that the bright color won’t alarm them, but may catch the eye of fellow hunters, and help prevent accidents.

King also emphasizes that any deer that are harvested must be tagged within 15 minutes, or before being moved. He explains that before being moved means that wherever the animal falls, it cannot be moved from that spot before it’s tagged. King mentions that many times group hunters get in trouble for moving deer untagged, mainly because they are going to meet up with others from their group that have the tags to put on the animals.
