Kirk Davis and his Greene County wrestling coaching staff knew at the start of the season they would have some open weights, meaning forfeiting six points to a dual meet opponent every time the Rams could not fill a weight class when the opposing team could. Not only has that been the case so far, but forfeiting as many as five weight classes and still producing a 5-5 dual meet record is something the coaching staff gives much credit to their wrestlers. “These kids knew going in we were going to need their very best efforts to be competitive, but you throw in the injuries we’ve had in the first couple weeks, and they’ve really battled. We need to continue to see that going forward, but so far, it’s been good.”
The latest example of being competitive and battling was on Saturday at the Ogden dual meet tournament where the Rams posted a 3-2 record and placed fifth among 10 teams. Two of the three wins were by two points, 38-36 vs. Woodward-Granger, and 35-33 against Ogden. In the W-G match, the Rams won a pair of one point matches, 2-1 for freshman Brennan Jacobs at 113 lbs. (he weighed in at 98 lbs.) and 6-5 at 215 lbs. for junior Marcus Ball, and both Rams trailed late in those matches. If either of those goes the other way, the Rams come up short. Against Ogden, the Rams were coming off a 71-12 thumping at the hands of tournament champion Algona, yet put that loss behind them to pull out the victory vs. the host team with five falls and a technical fall.
The Rams are home in Jefferson on Thursday, Dec. 14 vs. Saydel (Des Moines), then wrap up the 2023 portion of the schedule at Carroll High School for the Tiger Invitational on Saturday. Thursday is a middle school/high school doubleheader in the high school gym in Jefferson, a rare opportunity for fans to see Rams in grades 7-12 compete at home on the same night.
