Today’s high school wrestling features dual meet and individual tournaments, quadrangular and triangular meets, and not many dual meets with just two teams. The latter took place on Thursday night in Jefferson at the Greene County High School gym when Coach Kirk Davis’ Rams hosted the Saydel Eagles (Des Moines) in a Heart of Iowa Activities Conference match. The Rams won by a 60-23 score in a super fast 21 minutes. Open weight classes were an issue for both teams with only seven of the 14 weight classes being contested. The Rams collected five forfeits while forfeiting just twice. Of the seven matches that were wrestled, Greene County won five and all by first period fall. Saydel had one fall and one technical fall.
Coach Kirk Davis’ Rams are now 1-2 in the conference and 6-5 overall while the Eagles fell to 1-2 in the league and 2-4 on the season. Registering falls for the Rams were freshman Brennan Jacobs (113), senior Zeke Binkley (144), senior Gavin Scheuermann (157), freshman Degan Miller (165), and junior Brent Dennhardt (175). Rams collecting forfeits were freshman Jaron Jacobs (106) junior Gavyn Winters (120), junior Jacob Harmeyer (126), freshman Roman Sebourn (132), and senior Jackson Turner (150).
The Rams go to the Carroll Invitational on Saturday at Carroll High School for their final December competition. Activities Director Dave Wright reports the Rams have a Jan. 2 addition to the schedule as they’ll travel to Greenfield to meet Nodaway Valley, Lenox, and Martensdale-St. Mary’s on the second day of 2024..
