A Republican presidential candidate made a stop in Guthrie and Adair counties Thursday.
Vivek Ramawamy held a town hall meeting at the Guthrie Activity Center in Guthrie Center with about 20 people, including former Iowa Senator Jake Chapman. One of the topics he discussed was how he’s different from the other Republican candidates, and how that is beneficial for him.
“I don’t report to the ‘establishment.’ I report to the people of this country. And I do think it’s going to take someone from the next generation, somebody with fresh legs, to reach and lead and inspire the next generation of young Americans who have lost their sense of national pride. Well, I’m the youngest for US President as a Republican. I’m not doing this as a politician, I’m doing it as a businessman. I’ve taken on bureaucracies my entire life and won. That’s how I achieved the American Dream.”
Ramaswamy also said that his campaign is also working to bring in young voters who do not identify as Republican, like Libertarians and independents. He mentioned that among supporters of his campaign, close to 50-percent were first time voters, individuals not traditionally included in polls on which candidates have the most support. Ramaswamy explained that usually, a political party only brings in about two percent first time voters, and with these numbers, he is expecting other candidates to be surprised at the Iowa Caucuses. Later in the day, Ramaswamy also went to Greenfield in Adair County.
