Deer season continues for the year, but some may have noticed a change.

Iowa Department of Natural Resources Conservation Officer Jeremy King tells Raccoon Valley Radio that over time, the nature of the two gun seasons in December have changed since he began his career.

“I’ve been doing this job almost 20 years, and it started out as a shotgun season, and now it’s just referred to as a gun season. So you can use a rifle with straight wall ammunition that is between a .350 to a 0.5 caliber size.”

King explains that many use rifles of an AR platform like a bushmaster. He adds that a common question he gets is on magazine capacity, and says that it is legal to have the 30 round magazines. King does mention that just because you have more ammunition, doesn’t guarantee you’ll harvest an animal though, but that taking your time and making a good shot will be the better thing to do.
