A local non-profit in Jefferson that’s known for entertainment is currently underway with its annual fundraising campaign.

The Sierra Community Theatre is governed by a board, which currently has ten people, and Sarah Nicholson, who is the manager. She tells Raccoon Valley Radio that one of the reasons the movie theater is successful is because her and the board listens to the community’s feedback about kinds of movies they want to see, including the newest and the top of the box office.

“Just because we’re small doesn’t mean we shouldn’t have the same selection. Now have we missed the mark before, absolutely. But then again sometimes we’ve knocked it out of the park and people have been really great letting us know what they want. So if you don’t see it here, it’s not because we hate something or we don’t want to play it, we’ll play anything provided that it has an audience that wants to see it.”

Nicholson points out that they are also diversifying the basement of the theater, known as “the business center.” She says organizations and businesses can rent the space for meetings or presentations. She notes that they have partnered with the Jefferson Library Youth Services Department for special programs and they’ve hosted other events like a haunted house during Halloween that brought in between 300 and 400 people, as well as a Grinch-themed escape room over Christmas.

Nicholson adds their annual fundraising goal is $20,000 and there are lots of ways to donate. She says people can attend the movies, purchase popcorn and if anyone wants to make a monetary donation, they can drop it off when they are open or mail it to PO Box 346 in Jefferson.
