The Greene County Board of Supervisors is calling for a special election to happen in March to use a funding source for a needed project.

The Board is wanting to utilize Local Option Sales and Services Tax (LOSST) funds to help pay for a $3 million HVAC renovation project for the Greene County Courthouse. The special election would be for only unincorporated voters in the county that would be asked to change the revenue purpose statement for LOSST to include “100-percent of any lawful purpose.”

One of the stipulations for the Supervisors to have this kind of a special election was getting the support of the Jefferson City Council. The Council approved a resolution in support of it at their December meeting. City Administrator Scott Peterson clarifies the reason why the city had to be a part of the process.

“In order to be able to call the special election, they (the Supervisors) need to have the governing boards representing more than 50 percent of the affected population in the county of past resolutions to support and authorize this election. Well with the two entities together it’s more than 50 percent and they’re able to hold this election.”

As part of the special election, the Supervisors would also include in the ballot measure that there would be no sunset included with the change for LOSST. Peterson adds the city will maintain its sunset for its LOSST funds through June 30, 2027.
